As the fall 2025 semester approached, universities continued to adopt autonomous delivery robots as a way to modernize campus dining and meet student expectations for convenience. Old Dominion University (ODU) joined a small but growing list of campuses integrating commercial robot fleets into daily operations.

Grubhub and Starship Technologies launched an on-demand robot food delivery service at ODU on August 6, 2025. A fleet of 11 autonomous robots will deliver from seven campus eateries, including Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, Panera Bread, Qdoba, and Steak 'N Shake, to any location on campus within minutes.
Users order through the Grubhub app (iOS and Android), select a delivery point, and track the robot via an interactive map. When the robot arrives, an alert is sent, and the user unlocks it through the app. Each robot can carry up to 20 pounds (about three shopping bags).
Starship's robots use machine learning, AI, and sensors for sidewalk navigation and obstacle avoidance. Computer vision maps the environment to the nearest inch. The robots can cross streets, climb curbs, operate at night, and function in rain and snow. Remote human operators can monitor and take control if needed.
ODU becomes one of only three universities in Virginia to offer this service. Students can use meal plan flex points for orders but must pay the delivery fee with a credit card.
