As autonomous vehicle technology matures, high-speed racing has become a proving ground for AI systems that must make split-second decisions. The IAC will hold its Autonomous Challenge at CES 2025 on January 9 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. For the first time, the event will feature a multicar exhibition race with 3-4 autonomous racecars competing simultaneously over 20 laps, testing AI systems' ability to manage complex multi-agent interactions at high speed.
The competition adopts a three-tiered structure: Tier 1 single-car time trials to demonstrate stability at extreme speeds; Tier 2 a two-car passing competition for strategic head-to-head racing; and Tier 3 the multicar open-format race. This progressive difficulty allows teams of varying experience to compete and advance their AI driver development.
Two new university teams—Indiana University and Caltech—join the IAC, bringing the total to ten. Additionally, the IAC has been selected by DARPA as an official test and evaluation platform for the TIAMAT program, which aims to bridge the 'simulation to real' gap in AI training. The IAC-AV-24, described as the world's fastest autonomous racecar, will be on display, and conference sessions will explore physical AI development and cloud-based simulation.
