In late 2024, e-commerce and logistics operators were increasingly turning to mobile robotics to address labor shortages and improve warehouse safety and efficiency. Boston Dynamics had commercialized two robots—Spot for inspection and Stretch for box moving—but they had not yet been deployed together at enterprise scale.

Otto Group, one of the world’s largest e-commerce retailers, signed a strategic agreement with Boston Dynamics to deploy Spot robots in more than 10 facilities and Stretch robots in more than 20 facilities over the next two years, starting with Hermes Fulfilment. This marks the first time both commercially available robots will be used together at enterprise scale.
Spot will support tunnel inspections and predictive maintenance, including thermal monitoring, analog gauge reading, and acoustic detection of pressurized air and gas leaks. The Spot fleet will also run autonomous missions to collect data for machine learning models, assisting with fire exit egress monitoring and detecting subtle changes in storage racks.
Stretch, designed for warehouse box moving, will begin unloading containers at 10 facilities next year, with all sites expected operational by the end of 2025. It will handle heavy packages in the container sector, reducing physical strain on workers.
Otto Group has trained over 10,000 warehouse and facility workers through its TechUcation virtual courses, supplemented by on-site training. The companies also plan to collaborate on R&D for future use cases.
