In August 2024, the construction materials sector was increasingly turning to automation to meet rising demand while improving sustainability. Harvey Roofing, a division of South Africa's Macsteel, sought to modernize its production of EcoTile, a sustainable roofing product, and partnered with industrial robotics manufacturer Yaskawa to automate downstream processes.

Harvey Roofing upgraded its EcoTile production line with Yaskawa robots, following a successful prototype and business case. The company previously used Yaskawa feeding robots, which improved efficiency and reduced scrap. The new solution automates the entire process after extrusion of composite slabs, from start to finish.
According to Frikkie Erasmus, business unit executive at Harvey Roofing Products, the choice of robotics addressed safety concerns, increased efficiency and accuracy, and extended robot lifespan. Yaskawa's innovative solutions, prompt response, and existing relationship sealed the deal.
Yaskawa provided two technicians and one project leader for installation, working alongside Harvey Roofing's own team. The EcoTile, made from a mineral polymer composite, is lightweight, strong, weatherproof, paintable, and maintenance-free, offering a sustainable alternative in an industry with minimal prior innovation.
