Infineon Technologies officially opened the first phase of its Kulim 3 fab in Malaysia, which will become the world's largest and most efficient 200-millimeter silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductor facility. The first phase represents an investment of €2 billion and will focus on SiC power semiconductors and gallium nitride (GaN) epitaxy, creating 900 high-value jobs. A second phase, with up to €5 billion in additional investment, is planned to complete the world's largest SiC fab, potentially creating up to 4,000 jobs in total.
The fab will produce SiC semiconductors that enhance efficiency in electric vehicles, fast charging stations, trains, renewable energy systems, and AI data centers. Infineon has secured design wins worth approximately €5 billion, including six automotive OEMs and customers in renewable energy and industrial segments, and has received about €1 billion in prepayments from customers.
The Kulim 3 fab will operate as part of Infineon's 'One Virtual Fab' with its Villach, Austria site, sharing technologies and processes for wide-bandgap materials. It will be powered by 100% green electricity and employ advanced energy efficiency, abatement, and water recycling measures, targeting carbon neutrality and Green Building Index certification.
