Nexperia announced a $200 million investment to develop next-generation WBG semiconductors, including SiC and GaN, and to establish production infrastructure at its Hamburg-Lokstedt site. The investment also aims to increase wafer fab capacity for silicon (Si) diodes and transistors, with all three technologies to be developed and produced in Germany starting June 2024.
First production lines for high-voltage GaN D-Mode transistors and SiC diodes began in June 2024. Over the next two years, the company plans to set up modern 200 mm production lines for SiC MOSFETs and low-voltage GaN HEMTs, while converting existing silicon production to 200 mm wafers. Clean room expansions and new R&D laboratories will support a seamless research-to-production transition.
Nexperia expects the investment to stimulate local economic development, secure jobs, and enhance the EU's semiconductor self-sufficiency. The company collaborates with universities and research institutes, including participation in imec's Industrial Affiliation Program for GaN technology.
