In context
In early 2024, the commercial snow removal industry faced persistent labor shortages, with contractors covering larger regions and working long overnight hours. Automation was emerging as a solution to enhance productivity and safety in heavy equipment operations.
What was reported
Teleo, a developer of autonomous technology for heavy construction equipment, partnered with Storm Equipment, a major distributor of commercial snow plows, to launch what they claim is the only remote-operated and autonomous industrial snow plow commercially available in the United States. The system retrofits a John Deere 332G skid steer loader with a Metal Pless snow plow blade and Teleo's Supervised Autonomy technology.
Designed for mass snow clearing in large open areas like industrial parking lots, the machine is operated remotely from a central command center, offering a safer and more comfortable working environment. The retrofit can be applied to virtually any make and model of heavy equipment, and customers can order an appropriately sized autonomous-ready blade from Storm Equipment.
Initially, the snow plows will be remote-operated, with autonomous capabilities expected to be added in the first half of 2024. Teleo's technology can also be retrofitted onto existing fleets, enabling year-round use for snow removal, landscaping, and other site work without purchasing new machines.
Why it mattered
This development highlighted a growing trend of retrofitting existing heavy equipment with autonomous capabilities, offering a scalable and cost-effective solution to labor shortages. By allowing a single operator to manage multiple machines across different regions, the technology could significantly boost productivity and open new opportunities for non-traditional operators.
“This effectively could quadruple the productivity of a single skilled staff member, creating massive operational efficiencies for the snow contractor.”
