In context
In late 2023, industrial robot adoption was accelerating, yet offline programming (OLP) remained a bottleneck due to manual fine-tuning and error-prone path definition. CENIT's release aimed to push OLP toward autonomy, addressing the growing demand for flexible, cost-efficient automation in welding.
What was reported
CENIT's FASTSUITE E2 release 2023.2 introduced 28 new functions and enhancements, with three highlights: AI-based path optimization, automated seam search, and the Weld Cockpit for efficient welding planning. These features target process optimization and cost effectiveness in robot welding applications.
The AI-based OLP automatically generates and analyzes robot paths, identifying issues like collisions, axis limits, and singularities, then produces error-free programs without manual correction. According to Jens Fetzer, VP product strategy, this can reduce programming times by 50 to 80 percent, depending on component complexity.
Automated seam identification and tracing enable the robot programs to self-adjust for geometry deviations and tacking variations, reducing manual rework. The Weld Cockpit allows users to define welding paths using standard welding symbols or transfer from a 3D master model, standardizing tooling information and parameter assignment to improve consistency and quality.
“In real-world welding applications, workpieces often vary slightly in terms of dimensions and position tolerance, especially when the components are tacked manually. Because FASTSUITE helps the robot adapt to these deviations, we achieve highly reliable welding results and avoid manual intervention.”
Why it mattered
This release represented a step toward autonomous offline programming, potentially lowering the skill barrier for robot welding and enabling manufacturers to reduce cycle times and rework. The integration of AI and sensor-based adaptation pointed to a future where robots handle variability autonomously, improving productivity and quality in industrial automation.
