Review of LRAUV systems for long-term deep-sea monitoring, covering applications, key technologies, and development trends.

In context

Long-term monitoring of deep-sea environments has become essential for understanding marine ecosystems and environmental changes. Conventional autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are limited by battery life and must surface frequently for recharging and data transfer, interrupting continuous observation. To address this, deep-sea long-term resident AUV (LRAUV) systems, which can dock with underwater base stations for energy and data exchange, emerged as a key research focus in the deep-sea field.

What was reported

A review article in the journal Robot (2023, Vol. 45, No. 6) by Xu Huixi et al. from the State Key Laboratory of Robotics, Shenyang Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, systematically examined LRAUV systems. The paper defined LRAUV as a combination of an AUV and a seabed base station, enabling autonomous docking, recharging, and data transfer, allowing deployment for months to years without support vessels.

Typical applications include military underwater pre-positioned weapons, offshore oil and gas infrastructure inspection, maintenance, and repair (IMR), and scientific research such as monitoring mining impacts, volcanic eruptions, polar environments, and dynamic ecosystems. The review covered representative systems like Sabertooth, FlatFish, Freedom, Tri-TON 2, Imotus hovering AUV, and the Abyssal AUV, detailing their configurations and technical parameters.

Key technologies discussed include long-term survival, base station support, autonomous docking, energy replenishment, data transmission, and detection operations. The authors highlighted challenges such as reliable docking in deep-sea conditions and energy management, and outlined future directions for enhancing autonomy and endurance.

Why it mattered

LRAUV systems represent a significant shift toward persistent, unmanned underwater observation, reducing reliance on surface ships and remotely operated vehicles. This capability is critical for advancing marine science and cost-effective subsea infrastructure maintenance, with implications for industrial automation in harsh environments.

"The LRAUV system is an effective equipment to realize long-term monitoring of the deep-sea environment, and becomes a research hot-spot in the deep-sea field in recent years."
