Saildrone announced that its fleet of USVs has surpassed 1,000,000 nautical miles traveled and over 32,000 days at sea, equivalent to circumnavigating Earth 48 times. The achievement came exactly ten years after the first Saildrone USV sailed from San Francisco to Hawaii in 2013.
The fleet now comprises 136 vehicles in three size variants, operating in harsh environments from the Arctic ice edge to the Southern Ocean and even through a Category 4 hurricane. Powered by renewable wind and solar energy, the USVs carry sensors for measuring ocean parameters.
Originally focused on science and fisheries, Saildrone has expanded into ocean mapping, maritime security, and defense. The company reports building one mid-size Voyager per week and one large-size Surveyor per month.
