In 2023, warehouse automation was rapidly evolving, with AGVs and AMRs becoming standard for material handling. However, most relied on 2D laser scanners, which limited perception and safety. The need for more advanced, safety-certified sensors was growing as facilities pushed for higher efficiency and outdoor capabilities.
What was reported
Hesai Technology and Cratus, a lidar software integrator, announced a strategic alliance to develop autonomous warehouse solutions using Hesai’s QT128 3D lidar. Cratus selected the QT128 as the lead sensor for its new lidar perception package for AGVs and AMRs.
The QT128 features 128 laser channels and a 360-degree horizontal field of view, eliminating blind spots common with traditional 2D lidar (which typically have one channel and 270-degree or less FOV). This redundancy ensures continued operation even if a laser fails or is interfered with by sunlight, enabling outdoor use and between-warehouse transfers.
Critically, the QT128 has achieved ISO 26262 ASIL B – Performance Level D functional safety certification from TÜV Rheinland. This allows the sensor to detect risks and trigger protective actions, enabling safer and more efficient AGV operation. Cratus CEO Zeki Gunay noted the certification allows release of new software products to boost capabilities and safety in material handling.
