Advanced Navigation announced it would debut the underwater docking capability of its micro-AUV, Hydrus, at ICRA 2023. The docking station, slated for public release in late 2023, transforms Hydrus into a resident AUV, providing a permanent underwater home where it can recharge wirelessly and offload data via a communication modem.

Hydrus is a compact, all-in-one autonomous solution that can be carried on a plane, launched by a single person, and operated without specialized training. It features acoustic communication for real-time mission adjustments and wireless data retrieval. Its AI-based image processing captures high-quality, geo-referenced imagery in challenging conditions.

In resident mode, Hydrus enables long-term environmental monitoring, such as tracking coral growth rates and correlating with oceanographic data. It can also inspect aquaculture infrastructure, monitor fish health, automate wind farm inspections, and survey critical assets like power lines and data cables around harbors.

Why it mattered

This development signaled a shift toward persistent underwater robotics, reducing the need for costly survey vessels and ROVs.
