DJI's new Matrice 350 RTK offers 55-min flight, 2.7 kg payload, and advanced safety features for commercial operations.

In context

In May 2023, the commercial drone market was rapidly expanding beyond aerial photography into critical sectors like public safety, energy, and infrastructure. DJI, the dominant player in civilian drones, sought to reinforce its position with a new flagship platform that could meet the demanding requirements of professional operators.

What was reported

DJI announced the launch of the Matrice 350 RTK (M350 RTK), an upgraded flagship drone platform designed for commercial operations. The company claims it "sets a new standard for any commercial drone operator" and "redefines the ultimate tool for the commercial drone industry."

The M350 RTK features a maximum flight time of 55 minutes and a payload capacity of 2.7 kg, allowing operators to choose from various payloads for tasks such as mapping, inspection, and search-and-rescue. The new DJI O3 Enterprise Transmission system provides triple-channel 1080p HD live feeds with a maximum transmission distance of 20 km, using a four-antenna transceiver system that intelligently selects optimal antennas for improved anti-interference and stability.

Safety enhancements include an improved IP rating from IP45 to IP55, an enhanced FPV camera for better night navigation, and a new arm lock detection function. The drone also incorporates a six-directional binocular vision system and infrared sensing for comprehensive obstacle detection. For additional safety, an optional CSM radar can be mounted on top, offering a 360° detection range of up to 30 meters for subtle obstacles. The aircraft and sensor systems feature multi-layered redundancy for operation in harsh environments.

"The new capabilities offered by the advanced technology of the M350 RTK enables operators to push these boundaries even further."

Why it mattered

The M350 RTK represented a significant step forward in commercial drone capability, emphasizing safety, reliability, and versatility. Its enhanced transmission, payload, and protection features were poised to expand the practical applications of drones in industrial automation, potentially reducing costs and improving efficiency in sectors like infrastructure inspection and emergency response.
