

Europe's Meteosat Third Generation Imager 2 (MTG-I2) satellite has successfully completed its first critical post-launch milestones, marking the completion of the first full Meteosat Third Generation constellation in orbit. Launched on an Ariane 6 rocket from French Guiana, MTG-I2 is now operating as expected, with communication established and solar panels deployed.
Over the next two weeks, the satellite will be maneuvered to its operational geostationary orbit at 36,000 km above Earth, followed by a calibration and validation phase. Once operational, MTG-I2 will deliver EUMETSAT's rapid scan service over Europe and Northern Africa, refreshing imagery every 2.5 minutes—twice as frequently as the previous generation's rapid-scan service. This will provide forecasters with a more continuous view of rapidly developing weather systems, supporting timely warnings for severe storms, hail, damaging winds, and flash floods.
The satellite's dedicated fire-detection channels will also enhance monitoring of active fires and smoke development, addressing this summer's extreme weather and wildfire events. MTG-I2 joins Meteosat-12 (launched December 2022) and MTG-S1 (launched July 2025) to form the first full operational MTG constellation, described by EUMETSAT Director-General Phil Evans as "the most sophisticated and innovative geostationary meteorological system in the world."
